I haven’t gotten into the season as much as I like to but one thing I always enjoy is making an occasion out of pumpkin carving. I love to use items from around the house for a rugged, rustic look. Not only is it a great and easy theme, but it also saves money and you’re being green by using reclaimed items! Also, there’s always the risk that your neighbors don’t love Halloween as much as you do, but rustic décor won’t bother those who don’t participate in the festivities.

When you’re shopping it’s important not to go overboard- simple is better. Reclaimed wood, crates, real gourds, pumpkins, old wine barrels, recycled tin cans with candles in them and even stacks of hay are all great yard props.

Think Big: Oversized Mirrors

I love oversized mirrors in a space. Oversized items can really help to ground and anchor a room and mirrors always make your room feel much larger than it really is! Also, a huge mirror adds major drama and what gal doesn’t want a little of that!

I know that statement mirrors can also carry a hefty price tag so try checking out local estate sales for some high quality scores. And always keep in mind that you can stain and paint any old mirrors you might have already!

Oversized mirrors work well in any room but they’re especially great in small spaces like entryways. Remember that you can always place end tables and furniture in front of the mirror so don’t feel like it needs to stand on its own completely.

I’ve always loved Halloween. With it's crisp weather, and of course the decorating, fall is one of my favorite times of year.

Since I know some of you will be getting your decorations u, I figured I’d share my tips on how to decorate your home in a festive and stylish way!

I suggest you start the hunt for decorations at antique stores, second hand stores and hardware stores. Homegoods, Hobby Lobby, Michael's and your local markets are also good options.

I try to go for a rustic, fall look with my Halloween décor, which is also very versatile because you can keep most of the decorations up for Thanksgiving as well.

Here are a few specific ideas to include in your Halloween interiors:

1. Tin Can Votives: Grab some old tin cans, rust them out on your own with vinegar (or spray paint them), pierce holes in them and add a candle for a rustic series of votive holders around your home or your yard.

2. Painted Pumpkins: I love the idea of painting pumpkins and gourds to match the interior or exterior of your home. Just as you would decorate with accessories and knick-knacks, buy a set of craft paint that complements the color scheme of your home. Paint the pumpkins & arrange them in a cluster in your front entry, porch or on your kitchen table.

3. Chalkboard Pumpkins: I know I’ve mentioned my love of chalkboard paint before but it’s also fun to paint pumpkins and have the kids decorate them with chalk.

4. Get Witchy: It’s easy to make vintage witches’ brooms with straw, a large stick and twine. They’re perfect accessories near your front door or hanging from a large oak tree.

I love a good piece of art in the home and one of my favorite sources for original and personal artwork is my closet. Why not use your wardrobe as artwork? It represents your aesthetic and personality and it lets you look at your favorite clothing all the time!

It's fun to switch out that hanging dress, and also use your prettiest pair of shoes as décor (they are art after all!).

Try pulling out some of your favorite party frocks that fit the vibe of your room and draping them over a door or piece of furniture to start. If you like the look and want to hang the item on your wall all you really need is a nail; hammer; pretty hanger and your garment.

Alright, I am having a major moment with anything marbled right now. Lampshades to wallpaper to bedding to artwork- mark my words, marble is the new ikat.

I love a cozy, personal space, yet it’s sometimes hard to entertain when you aren’t working with big rooms and tons of seating.

One of the tricks I’ve learned when entertaining in a cozy pad is to utilize all of your space, including your outdoor patio! Add little touches to make it feel more like an extension of your home - the more homey it feels, the more likely your guests are to hang out outside!

To make your patio more inviting try placing items that are traditionally “indoor items” outside! An inexpensive mirror, charming sign, feminine chandelier, porcelain vases and rustic lanterns took my patio from standard to stylish.

Colorful and patterned pillows also go a long way, as does lighting- make sure you have some candles out there to light when it gets dark (a plus: it’s romantic!).

Since it’s back to school time I’ve been thinking about any of you guys that might be headed off to college this fall! I know that the dorm rooms at most schools are far from stylish so I thought I’d give you some tips on how to dress up your space.

Here are some of my dorm room tips to remember:

1. Go for functionality. Since you’re working with such a small space, items that are practical and stylish will make your space feel cleaner and more organized. Try thinking of unique ways to store what you know you’ll need- like cute wicker baskets for all of your electronics, or colorful, glass vases for highlighters and pens.

2. Don’t splurge on your bedding. Okay this might be an obvious one but since you’re only going to be in that tiny dorm of yours for one year don’t go for extravagant bedding. Urban Outfitters has a ton of adorable and affordable bedding for twin beds.

3. Get artsy. Art is probably not the first necessity that comes to mind when you’re shopping for your dorm but inexpensive art can make such a huge difference in the style of your space! Consider framed posters, framed photos of your family or even try framing your favorite silk scarves- they make colorful, fun and cheap artwork!

4. Make it yours. Bring all of those little, unique details that make your room feel distinctly yours. Whether it’s your retro records hanging on the wall, a photo collage of your best friends, or a quilt from your Grandma that always reminds you of home- bring it with you! Personal touches are the most important thing if you want your dorm to feel less dorm-y and more home-y.

Quick Tip: Picking A Paint Color

One of the tips I always tell do-it-yourself clients is that when choosing a paint color that's not a neutral, go to the color that they are attracted to the most. Whether it's fiery red, vibrant yellow or pale, calming blue, don't run from what you love.

Once you've found your designspiration, here's what you do:

Go to your local paint store and find your color. There are many ways to do this, but the easiest is to bring a swatch of something with that color in it. It could be a favorite dress, a photo of that trip you took, even a beloved heirloom. Bring it to the store and ask the paint expert to match it for you. Many stores now have special tools to find the perfect match.

Once you have that color, what you want to do is ask your expert to show you variations on it. I always recommend you take your ‘desired’ color & tone down the value & saturation by about 20-30%.

Oftentimes, we are drawn to a color that might be fine for a pair of earrings or a throw pillow, but not ideal for a wall or whole room. Take for example the Silver Sage Collection by Restoration Hardware . Typically it feels quite grey, but in a crisp space, this color will be a warm sea glass wispy green/blue. The human eye is very sensitive and will pick up the subtle color and then, when you do accents in the main color you fell in love with, they'll really shine.

I have to admit something. I am a bit of a chair addict. I love finding a fantastic chair in a new shade or pattern. In fact, chairs can be one of the most dynamic accent pieces in your home. Plus, they’re functional, not frivolous. A bright and fun chair can work perfectly in a living room, office, and of course, at the dining room table. And the brighter and bolder the shade, the bigger the wow factor.

This set of chairs is exactly what I’m talking about. Beautifully designed and in a bold shade of lipstick red, this dining room seating really stands out, especially when placed against an all-white color scheme and the vintage chairs at the head of the table.

Wallpaper is a great alternative to simply painting your walls. There are so many patterns, colors, and textures, that choosing the right one for your space can be overwhelming. The first thing to do is consider the style of the room that you are decorating, and choose your wallpaper to compliment that style. Once you have chosen the right pattern for your space, now it is time to decide where you are going to hang it. You can choose to do one “feature wall” (make sure the wall that is your “feature” is worth drawing attention to!!). A feature wall is great when your pattern is bold, it is a great way of making a statement without taking it too far. You could also choose to do all four walls, or just below the chair rail. Really, they are perfect almost anywhere because of their functional storage and variation in size. They are also great because they come in so many styles, from rustic to traditional. You can use the trunk to help organize the room that it is in. For example, if you are using it as a coffee table in your living room, use the trunk’s storage space to put your winter throw and pillows in the spring and vice-versa. Some trunks also come with a small drawer. Face it toward your sofa so that you can neatly hide away all of those remote controls!

Carpets all over the country are being ripped up every day, but why? Well, there are a few reasons. The first is for re-sale. The first thing that a person looks at when they walk into your home are the floors, and that first impression is absolutely critical! Also, if a home has wood floors (in good condition) throughout, it can boost sales from 4-7%. Second, most people want a home that is move-in ready. Fixer-uppers take too much time and people are busier than ever. Next, people respond well sleek, clean lined everything. For example wood, on any surface is, and always has been a sign of quality. It also lasts much longer than most carpets, and is guaranteed even longer. In fact, many hardwoods could be guaranteed for 30 years! On average, wood flooring costs $2.00 more per square foot, but is well worth it for resale value and you won’t have to rip it up and replace it in 7-10 years. Carpet is also being replaced by things like tile and eco-friendly flooring like cork or bamboo. Now, carpet is not yet dead. It is still hard to beat a warm, comfy floor in a child’s or family room. The carpet industry is constantly creating new designs and ways to stay current. The best thing to do is to evaluate your space and see what will be best for you and your family. If you love the sleek look of wood, but want the warmth of a carpet, use an area rug with a pad underneath- it will give you the best of both worlds.

Step 1:
Iron the napkin flat.

Step 2:
Fold the napkin in half so that the open end is facing away from you.

Step 3:
On the right hand side of the napkin, fold both corner edges towards the center to form two triangles.

Step 4:
Fold the left side of the napkin over in half to meet the right.

Step 5:
